Reporting a wrong figure

This is the most useful thing you can send. Include the page address and what you expected to see — ideally with the NHTSA or EPA record you are comparing against. Every number here traces back to a specific published file, so a concrete report can be checked properly rather than guessed at.

Before writing, it is worth reading how the numbers are counted. Two differences come up often and are both deliberate: component counts sum to more than the complaint total, because one complaint can cite several components; and a missing crash rating means NHTSA never tested that model year rather than that it scored badly.

Using the data

The underlying records are US government works and carry no copyright. If you are citing a figure, cite the publisher and the date you retrieved it, and link to the page you took it from. If you need something in bulk, ask — it is usually easier for both of us than scraping, and the API is rate-limited.

What we cannot help with

We are not NHTSA and cannot act on a safety complaint. To file one, use NHTSA's own reporting form. We also cannot amend or remove a published record: those corrections have to be made at the source, and this site will reflect them once the agency republishes.

We cannot tell you whether to buy a particular car, diagnose a fault, or say whether a recall applies to your vehicle. For that last one, NHTSA's VIN lookup is authoritative and free.
