The issue described is evident as the rear seat belt buckles are not resistor coded The system uses a non-resistor coded buckle strategy (zero-infinity or open-closed buckle) for the rear seats. In correct operation, a fastened seatbelt is open circuit and an un-fastened seatbelt is closed circuit If harness damage is present or an electrical connector joint is not properly engaged, an unintended open circuit occurs. Technical background: We have observed instances where the caps have been difficult to remove once fitted, the issue is caused by corrosion. The valve stem itself is made from aluminium and the accessory valve caps are chromium plated brass, it is possible under certain environmental conditions, particularly winter road salt, for corrosion to take place between these dissimilar metals. Measure: The solution is to apply a thin smear of silicon-based grease, such as Dow Corning high vacuum grease, to the external threads of the valve stem prior to fitting the accessory valve cap. Measure: A specific vacuum pump failure is known to create a ticking noise. This ticking noise, on initial inspection, is easily misinterpreted as a fault in the valve train or fuel injector, when in reality it is more likely to be produced by a defective vacuum pump. Therefore always ensure that this type of noise is identified precisely using a stethoscope. Engine lubricating oil requires topping up between services. Technical background: In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified running-in periods consume more oil during the running-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the running-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific running-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue, and the oxidation level of the oil. Certain driving conditions may negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods

Engine Lubricating Oil - Replenishment. Customer statement / workshop findings: Engine lubricating oil lamp illuminated on driver instrument panel. Engine lubricating oil requires topping up between services. Technical background: In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified running-in periods consume more oil during the running-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the running-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific running-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue, and the oxidation level of the oil. Certain driving conditions may negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods.

Technical background The Bentley Rear Entertainment Tablet incorporates battery voltage protection, under certain conditions this system can prevent the internal battery from accepting a charge current, this would normally require the Tablet to be replaced. Brake noise identification. Customer statement: Noise complaint from the braking system. Workshop findings: The noise can be reproduced and clearly assigned to the braking system. Technical Background: Brake noises can be attributed to many causes. Eight of the most common causes are: 1. Brake discs or pads are close to their wear limit. 2. New brake pads and/or discs have not been properly bedded in after installation. 3. Aftermarket pads or discs are installed. 4. There is debris such as small stones, grit, road salt or sand between the brake disc and pad. 5. Discs are covered in rust. Rust can form when the vehicle has been stationary for long periods of time (Figure 1).

The Adaptive air suspension control unit (J775) controls several functions in the car in particular the master for the active roll control system, The control unit contains developed suspension and damping control software. Should one of the modules be replaced for example (J775) on an early model vehicle the newer software contained within the replacement control unit may not be compatible with (J924) and/or (J1096)

Workshop findings: The customer statement can be reproduced. Technical background The conductibility of the washer fluid can be significantly lowered by the following factors. As a result, the water level switch of the washer fluid low warning lamp can be activated although the washer fluid reservoir is sufficiently full. Washer fluid additives which do not meet the following specification During winter conditions a solution of 30% isopropyl alcohol and 70% water should be used (or appropriate alternative). This washer fluid and water mixture will provide frost protection down to a temperature of approximately 10 degrees C (14 degrees F). Frozen washer fluid. Distilled water.

Air spring fault finding. Customer statement / workshop findings: The front and/or rear suspension appears to have dropped. Technical background: The list of Bentley vehicles below are fitted with air springs as part of the suspension system. Should air leak from the air springs, this will cause the suspension to drop. However, the dropping of the suspension does not necessarily mean that the air spring is faulty. TheMeasure section of this TPI describes how and where to check for air leaks on the front and rear air springs, the air pump compressor, pipes, valve unit and air reservoirs. This includes potential air leak points on the air springs and also the locations of an air leak that can be repaired without the need to replace an air spring. Engine Lubricating Oil - Replenishment. Customer statement / workshop findings: Engine lubricating oil lamp illuminated on driver instrument panel. Engine lubricating oil requires topping up between services. Technical background: In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified running-in periods consume more oil during the running-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the running-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific running-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue, and the oxidation level of the oil. Certain driving conditions may negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods.

Condition: Customer statement: Noise complaint from the braking system. Workshop findings: The noise can be reproduced and clearly assigned to the braking system. Technical Background Brake noises can be attributed to many causes. Eight of the most common causes are: 1. Brake discs or pads are close to their wear limit. 2. New brake pads and/or discs have not been properly bedded in after installation. 3. Aftermarket pads or discs are installed. 4. There is debris such as small stones, grit, road salt or sand between the brake disc and pad. 5. Discs are covered in rust. Rust can form when the vehicle has been stationary for long periods of time (Figure 1). 6. Discs have a groove in them (Figure 2) 7. There is chemical contamination on the braking surface of the disc due to a wheel or tyre cleaner being sprayed directly onto the disc (Figure 3). 8. There are pad marks on the brake disc as a result of the brake pad material transferring to the discs. This can occur when a vehicle has been stood for long periods of time in a wet or snowy environment (Figure 4).

Washer fluid additives which do not meet the following specification During winter conditions a solution of 30% isopropyl alcohol and 70% water should be used (or appropriate alternative). This washer fluid and water mixture will provide frost protection down to a temperature of approximately 10 degrees C (14 degrees F). Frozen washer fluid. Distilled water.
