Customers with one of the vehicles above may complain that the engine's oil consumption is "too high," resulting in engine oil top-ups and workshop visits to address the issue before the vehicle displays an engine oil service as being "due." When the vehicle's engine oil drops to the minimum level, a message will display in the vehicle advising the driver to "add 1 quart of engine oil." After topping up and continued operation, the "add engine oil" message may display again before an engine oil service is required and performed. CAUSE Engines that are fitted with a turbocharger, as part of their normal operation, will consume engine oil at a higher rate than a naturally aspirated engine (non-turbocharged engine). In this case, a "turbocharged" engine could require topping up of the engine oil more frequently.

On vehicles exhibiting reproducible smoking from the tailpipe when hot, additional engine diagnostic steps (e.g. engine compression test, leak-down tests; inspection of the crankcase ventilation lines and turbo intake/outlet tubes for excessive oil accumulation) should be performed and documented prior to replacement of the valve seals, in order to eliminate other possible causes. Refer to the SIBs listed above for important diagnostic tips. Do not remove the intake manifolds to clean the intake valve carbon.

When diagnosing an engine oil leak or a coolant leak on turbocharged V8 engines it is necessary to use a borescope to identify if the source of the leak is from under the turbochargers. Engine Idle Speed Fluctuates Intermittently, when Shifting into Gear. While stationary, the engine idle speed could fluctuate (once or a few times) after engaging either "Drive" or "Reverse gear. It is possible that the engine could also stall. This situation is intermittent, difficult to reproduce, and would not cause a fault to be stored. They should be completed only based on parts availability, workshop capacity, and the customer's schedule. Performing the test plans identified in the procedure below will detect wear at an early stage and, if necessary, provide a repair solution. To avoid future valvetrain wear, the vehicle must be reprogrammed and a shorter oil service interval must be retrofitted via ISTA/P. Finally, drain and replace the engine's oil and filter. After completing all necessary repairs included in the N63 Customer Care Package and the Timing Chain Check, the vehicle must be test driven for up to 30 minutes to ensure that the repairs were performed to the highest standard.

INFORMATION The Car Information Computer (CIC) began replacing the Car Communication Computer (CCC) on vehicles with option 609 in September of 2008. This change affected the navigation system road map data support process and the warranty spare parts processes for the CIC. For the US market, all vehicles come pre-loaded from the factory with the latest navigation system road map database version that was available at the time of vehicle production. Therefore, no physical copy of the navigation system road map data media DVD set or USB stick is placed in these vehicles at the Vehicle Distribution Center (VDC). NOTE: Additionally, all replacement CIC parts come with a pre-loaded version of the current available navigation system road map database installed. A set of DVD copies of the navigation system road map database, CIC NAVI Road Map North America PREMIUM, is shipped to all BMW centers through the automatic tool shipment program with each release of a navigation system road map database. Intelligent Battery Sensor Diagnosis Hints. This is normal operation for all E-Series vehicles because they do not have the Advanced IBS sensor that the F-Series vehicles do. An external battery tester (Midtronics EXP-1000) must be used to determine if the battery needs to be replaced. Energy Diagnosis will not prompt for a battery replacement unless the battery is "aged." When energy diagnosis identifies the battery as "aged," it means the amount of energy discharge over the course of the life of the battery has reached its maximum (worn out). In most cases, energy diagnosis states that the battery is OK. This is typically an indication of the current State of Charge (SoC), not the State of Health (SoH). The SoC is defined as the current amount of energy left in the battery (displayed as a percentage). The SoH is defined as an evaluation of the condition of the battery over a period of time (displayed as a percentage). During the vehicle's operational life, normal engine oil seepage or sweating, in addition to accumulated road dust, dirt and grime in the engine compartment can cause the appearance of a more severe oil leak. This is further exaggerated by residual oil that remains on the engine assembly after maintenance services are performed, e.g., oil filter changes, "engine oil top-offs," etc. If this visual appearance of accumulated oil on the engine assembly as an "active leak" is misinterpreted, unnecessary gasket repairs/replacements will result. Customers with one of the vehicles above may complain that the engine's oil consumption is "too high," resulting in engine oil top-ups and workshop visits to address the issue before the vehicle displays an engine oil service as being "due." When the vehicle's engine oil drops to the minimum level, a message will display in the vehicle advising the driver to "add 1 quart of engine oil." After topping up and continued operation, the "add engine oil" message may display again before an engine oil service is required and performed. Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign 11E-A03: Check and/or Replace Emissions Monitoring Components. 1. Under certain driving conditions, the High-pressure (HP) EGR valve may become restricted with excessive soot. This restriction impedes the emissions performance of the HP EGR valve. This situation may lead to a Service Engine Soon lamp. An optimized EGR valve has been developed to limit this soot buildup. 2. The Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) mixer has also been improved to optimize the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) mixture when introduced into the exhaust system. Note: These Improved parts may have already been replaced during a previous service visit. It will be necessary to inspect these components first before replacement. 3. Reprogramming of the DDE is required to optimize these improved emissions monitoring components. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Emissions Recall Campaign involves X5d (E70) and 335d (E90) models that were produced from April 2009 to March 2011. In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Emissions Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Emissions Recall Campaign, first check if the "Emissions Recall Campaign Completed" label SD 92-435. This label is attached to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield. If the label is found, the campaign has already been performed. If the "Emissions Recall Campaign Completed" label is not present, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

Squeaking Noises from Steering Wheel While Turning. There is a squeaking noise from the steering column when the steering wheel is turned. The rubber boot on the steering column is not positioned correctly or lacks sufficient grease for the plastic bearing. INFORMATION The problem has been integrated into ISTA diagnostics. Follow the diagnosis test plan, using the latest ISTA version. In "Information Search," select the "Function Structure" tab. Select "Chassis and Suspension / Steering / Steering interference noise," and then press "Start Search." Select test plan "AM3201_00222 - Steering noises." In certain situations, the battery may become discharged when the vehicle is driven frequently on short trips (less than 3 miles per trip), or when the telephone or entertainment system is used for up to 30 minutes while the vehicle is stationary. Various Faults Concerning the Automatic Tailgate Operation. Complaints of sporadic or permanent faults may exist with the automatic tailgate function. Discharged Battery: Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed. The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle "discharged battery" complaints. A discharged battery can have various causes, most of which do not concern the battery itself. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and must be replaced. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair.
