TT-16-007

Service Bulletin/Repair Instructions

Hino Conventional Trucks 2013-17 model year COE Truck. The vehicle may exhibit a MIL lamp illuminated with DTC's P20DE, P2DF, P0087, or P016F, present in the engine ECU due to fuel system contamination. Fuel contalmination can be defined as the presence of water, rust, algae, bacteria, poor quality fuel, or any other substance other than ultra-low sulfur fuel in the fuel system. Fuel tank corrosion is a result of contamination and is NOT considered a manufacturer's defect. Malfunctions that result from fuel contamination are NOT warrantable failures. Contamination can restrict flow to the aftertreatment dosing injector (5th or 7th injector) resulting in DTC's P20DE, P20DE and/or P20DF. 2015 through 2017 model year conventional trucks also have a fuel filter within the bubble separator. If this filter becomes restricted, this restriction can also cause DTC's P20DE, and P20DF. Contamnination can also result in DTC's P016F, and/or P0087 with or without adverse drivability symptoms. Before in depth diagnostics or repairs are performed, inspect the fuel filter housings and fuel tank(s) for signs of contamination.

General - Brake switch low power diagnosis. Conventionnal Trucks or 2013 - 16 (155, 195) COE trucks. The purpose of the tech tip is to provide information for a low power concern possibly relating to the brake switch. Hino Trucks are equipped with two brake switches. First, a stop lamp switch that is designed to activate stop lamps on the truck. Second, a brakeswitch that is designed to send brake application input for modules to monitor brake activation. When monitoring DXII with the brake applied, the switches should both read ON and when the brake pedal is released, they shoiuld both read OFF. If the brake is not applied (typically when accelerating) and if one switch reads ON while the other reads OFF when the brake pedal is not applied, a brake switch correlation concern is the likely cause. Perform the following to identify the switch with this concern.

1) DPR System (Diesel Particulate Regeneration) manual regeneration may not complete; this occurs when the BCU temporally detects sticking of the CAV (Combustion Air Valve). This mis-detection will cause regeneration to be suspended. In order to avoid this interruption of DPR manual regeneration, enhanced BCU (Burner Control Unit) software is available. 2) Misdetection of P2030 (Burner System Misfire); the BCU monitors the flame temperature to confirm burner ignition occurred correctly. In some cases, a misfire may be mis-detected if the flame is not in direct contact with the sensor. In order to prevent this mis-detection enhanced BCU software is available.

Conventional with burner system, For trucks equipped with the burner system, certain environmental and unit applications have been foiund to cause unreliable operation of the system. Collected technical data indicates that decreasing the maintenance intervals can greatly improve system reliability. High idle, time, constant ex haust brake operation, stop and go traffic and PTO operation can be factors that reduce reliability. A general burner system cleaning and inspection and being recommended at 75k miles and the 150k service interval will stay the same. Two parts kits have been developed to include all the necessary parts for the 150k service and the added 75k service if it is determined that parts replacement is needed.

DPR damage, "Burner misfire due to excessive soot on the burner igniter surface", and "DPR push out" may occur due to the increase in the amount of soot in exhaust gas as a result of engine component degradation. In order to reduce the soot in exhaust gas under this situation, even when the engine components are deteriorated, enhanced ECU software has been released. Reprogram the ECU if the failure conditions stated above occur AND the cause could not be determined after diagnosis.
