Technical service bulletins are instructions a manufacturer sent its dealers about a known fault. They are not recalls and the work is usually not free, but they are the clearest signal of a problem the manufacturer already knows about.

A musty/mildew type odor may come from the vents when the air conditioning (A/C) system is operating. It is most noticeable when the A/C is first turned ON. This odor is the result of mold growth in the A/C evaporator/cooling unit which is caused by condensation, dust, and pollen within the cooling unit. This condition is usually worse during high humidity conditions. “Mazda Air Cooling Coil Coating” is available to encapsulate the mold to reduce odors. If the product is properly applied, it can effectively reduce the musty/mildew odor for up to three years. NOTE: See parts information for Mazda Air Cooling Coil Coating and Kit part numbers.

Some vehicles may experience exterior trim heat damage such (melted, separating, etc.) when parked near a glass building or Low-E windows. This may be caused by the sun's reflection. If a structure's windows create enough of a curve, the concave glass can focus the sun's rays onto a small area and acting like magnifiying glass direct the sunbeams into a hot pinpoint of light. This magnifcation of the sun's rays can cause damage to vehicle trim (see examples). Additional information and exemplar images regarding this phenomenon can be found by performing a google search.

In accordance with Federal regulations, follow the procedure listed below when replacing a speedometer. NOTE: Tampering with a motor vehicle odometer is strictly prohibited by Federal, and State laws. It is the dealer’s responsibility to comply with Federal, State, and local laws concerning odometer and related documentation requirements when providing a repair or replacement. Mazda vehicles are manufactured with tamper-proof speedometers. When a speedometer is replaced, the new speedometer will read zero (0) miles. This procedure is extremely important to accurately represent actual vehicle mileage. Prior to speedometer removal, complete the information required on the “Speedometer Replacement Label”. Labels can only be ordered through Mazda eStore. In an effort to achieve a higher level of Customer Experience and retain the value of Mazda’s vehicles, MNAO Warranty Operations is allowing all Mazda dealers to utilize a third party, SPECMO Enterprises, Inc., for Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) odometer setting service. With the use of SPECMO’s services, it is possible that the odometer will be set between 10 to 31 miles over the odometer mileage at the time of replacement for both warranty and customer pay repairs. Please make sure that the customer is aware that there may be a slight variance to the odometer, in which case the customer may have to accept the slightly higher mileage. Since odometer setting service is not part of the warranty repair, it is not warrantable nor required, but optional. However, Mazda Warranty policy provides after- warranty assistance (AWA) or DSA that can be utilized to cover this service expense.

Some customers may complain of condensation/fog inside the front (headlamp/headlight) or rear (taillamp/taillight) combination lights. The recent new models have been fitted with a clear lens which can cause the symptom to be more noticeable, however, it does not affect the performance of the light. This condensation/fog is a natural phenomenon that occurs when there is a fairly large temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the light housing. It is normal for very small water drops to appear in certain locations on the light units where the air is stagnant (condensation), making the lens look whitish (fog). This happens mostly in the corners and narrow spaces, and will typically clear during warmer ambient temperatures, or when the lights have been on for some time.

On some vehicles, a sulfur smell or 'rotten egg' odor may be noticed coming from the exhaust system. The odor is usually noticed after a cold start, fast idle, extended periods of idling and full throttle acceleration. Sulfur smell is not an indication of an engine concern and will not cause reduced driveability or durability of the engine or any of its emission components. The sulfur smell or 'rotten egg' odor is caused by high amounts of sulfur in the gasoline being used in the vehicle. Sulfur is normally eliminated during the refining process, but the EPA regulation of sulfur in gasoline differs from state to state. Vehicles using fuel containing high amounts of sulfur will most likely emit sulfur smell from the exhaust system. When high sulfur fuel is burned, there is a chemical reaction in the catalytic converter causing the sulfur tooxidize. As the vehicle is driven, the oxidizing reaction odor in the converter will decrease with mileage and age.

A musty/mildew type odor may come from the vents when the air conditioning (A/C) system is operating. It is most noticeable when the A/C is first turned ON. This odor is the result of mold growth in the A/Cevaporator/cooling unit which is caused by condensation, dust, and pollen within the cooling unit. This condition is usually worse during high humidity conditions. "Mazda Air Cooling Coil Coating" is available to encapsulate the mold to reduce odors. If the product is properly applied, it can effectively reduce the musty/mildew odor for up to three years. NOTE: See parts information for Mazda Air Cooling Coil Coating and Kit part numbers. This treatment provides a durable coating that will aid to prevent biological reactions that lead to odorconcerns. It is applied to the evaporator in a misted form that is introduced by way of the cabin air filter, the re-circulate door, the blower motor resistor access, or the blower motor air intake. Proper application requires the evaporator surface to be: Relatively clean and free of leaves, dust build-up and debris. Thoroughly dried, and the product cured onto it after application. NOTE: Keep the cooling unit dry by leaving the blower fan ON (at least on low), even if the A/C is not being used. In low humidity (dry) conditions, keep the ventilation system in the "FRESH" mode all the time, or as much as possible. In high humidity conditions, or if the air has a lot of dust or pollen, keep the system in the "RECIRCULATION" mode. A few minutes before reaching a destination, turn the A/C OFF, but leave the blower fan ON. This stops the accumulation of condensation on the evaporator/cooling unit, and it helps dry the inside of the cooling unit. A/C odor is not unique to Mazda vehicles as it will occur in other makes and models. To minimize A/C odor, suggest the following to the customers.

WHEN REPROGRAMMING A CONTROL MODULE, ALWAYS USE THE GR-8 BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM POWER SUPPLY MODE. IF NOT USED, THE CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMING MAY FAIL DUE TO A WEAK VEHICLE BATTERY.THE GR-8 BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM POWER SUPPLY MODE PREVENTS THE VEHICLE BATTERY FROM BEING DISCHARGED. THIS ALLOWS THE IDS TO REPROGRAM A CONTROL MODULE WITHOUT INTERFERENCE FROM A WEAK OR UNDERCHARGED VEHICLE BATTERY. NOTE: CONTROL MODULE DAMAGE MAY OCCUR IF THE GR-8 BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM POWER SUPPLY MODE IS NOT USED.

ALWAYS BE SURE TO USE THE CORRECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID WHEN REPLACING ATF. USING THE WRONG ATF MAY CAUSE SHIFT QUALITY COMPLAINTS OR MAY EVEN DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSION.NOTE: ATF M-V (TYPE M5) IS NOT THE SAME FLUID AS MERCON®V OR MERCON®LV ATF. ATF M-V (TYPE M5) HAS A GREATER VISCOSITY THAN MERCON®V AND MERCON®LV ATF IN LOW TEMPERATURES. ATF M-V (TYPE M5) HAS A GREATER ANTI-JUDDER SPECIFICATION THAN MERCON®V AND MERCON®LV ATF. TRANSMISSION FLUID FLUSHING SHOULD ONLY BE PERFORMED WHEN INSTRUCTED BY THE WORKSHOP MANUAL OR ANY OTHER MAZDA PUBLICATION. CAUTION: USING ATF OTHER THAN ATF M-V (TYPE M5) IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS DESIGNED TO USE ATF M-V (TYPE M5) MAY CAUSE SHIFT QUALITY COMPLAINTS. USING ANY OTHER ATF OTHER THAN THE SPECIFIED ATF IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS MAY CAUSE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE. USING A GENERIC, MULTI-PURPOSE OR UNIVERSAL ATF MAY CAUSE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE. DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION CAUSED BY USING THE INCORRECT ATF, OR A GENERIC, MULTI-PURPOSE OR UNIVERSAL ATF WILL NOT BE COVERED BY WARRANTY.

SOME CUSTOMERS MAY COMPLAIN OF CONDENSATION/FOG INSIDE THE FRONT (HEADLAMP/HEADLIGHT) OR REAR (TAILLAMP/TAIL-LIGHT) COMBINATION LIGHTS. THE RECENT NEW MODELS HAVE BEEN FITTED WITH A CLEAR LENS WHICH CAN CAUSE THE SYMP-TOM TO BE MORE NOTICEABLE, HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE LIGHT. EXPLAIN TO THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS IS A NATURAL PHENOMENON AND NOT A QUALITY DEFECT. DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIRS AS THIS IS CONSIDERED NORMAL, AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. REPLACING THE LIGHT UNIT WILL NOT CORRECT THIS SYMPTOM.

ON SOME VEHICLES, THE FUEL FILLER LID WILL NOT OPEN/CLOSE. THIS MAY BE CAUSED BY SNOW WITH ROAD SALT BEING BROUGHT INTO THE FOOTWELL AREA. THE MELTED SALT WATER THEN FLOWS ALONG THE OPENER LEVER (A) AND ENTERS INTO THE CABLE (B) CAUSING THE INNER-CABLE TO CORRODE AND SEIZE. TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, A FLANGE HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE FUEL FILLER LID OPENER LEVER (A) TO PREVENT WATER FROM FLOWING ALONG THE LEVER TO THE FUEL FILLER LID CABLE.
