Service bulletins

38 bulletins

Technical service bulletins are instructions a manufacturer sent its dealers about a known fault. They are not recalls and the work is usually not free, but they are the clearest signal of a problem the manufacturer already knows about.

SUBJECT: Destruction and scrapping of engine assemblies replaced under warranty MODELS: FEC52, FEC72, FEC92, FGB72, FEC7T, FECZT, FEC9T DESCRIPTION: Engines replaced under warranty must be held for 60 days from claim payment, unless otherwise instructed to return the engine to MFTA or one of its suppliers. At the conclusion of the 60-day warranty retention period, in order to ensure that engines comply with current US EPA regulations, we ask that you follow the procedures outlined on the following pages to ensure that the engine block is damaged and rendered useless for repair or remanufacturing. The Environmental Protection Agency, in regulation 40 C.F.R. § 1068.240(b)(3), requires manufacturers to “…destroy the old engine block (or confirm that it has been destroyed)…” so that prevention of the engine from re-entering commerce is guaranteed. After the engine is destroyed, take a photo of the damaged portion and the engine serial # and email them to MFTA with your Dealer Code, the VIN and the Engine Serial # in the header of the email. Send the email to mfta_service@daimler.com. IMPORTANT! Failure to properly scrap an engine assembly and notify MFTA may result in claim chargeback.

UBJECT: 4P10 Engine Repair vs. Replacement Worksheet MODELS: FEC52, FEC72, FEC92, FGB72 DESCRIPTION: When repairing engine damage, dealers are expected to follow the most economical repair method, regardless of whether the repair is within warranty or is customer pay. If the vehicle is within warranty coverage, and the damage is severe enough to question whether an engine repair is the most economical solution, the dealer must open a Technical Assistance Request (TAR) and submit a 4P10 repair cost comparison worksheet. The Technical Support Center will review the worksheet and the information outlined for 4P10 engine failures in SIB 19-005, and will provide repair guidance accordingly. The worksheet is located in the TSC Resource Center under “4P10 Cost Simulator for repair vs replacement”, and under Service-Publications-Service Forms-“MFTA-4P10WS”. Please note that MFTA supplies large engine components such as cylinder blocks, short engine assemblies, etc. for 4P10 engine repairs when a complete engine assembly replacement is not essential.

When this number is entered into the EEC using the FD Tool, DO NOT include the ?D? at the end of the injector code, enter only the fi rst seven characters. If the entire code is entered, an error will be displayed stating that the code is invalid.

Complaint counts are reports filed with NHTSA, not failure rates. A common model collects more of them than a rare one that breaks more often.
