The control arms of the front and trailing axles are equipped with a flexible ball-joint at the chassis side. Van Hool has several suppliers for the repair kit of this flexible ball-joint. All of the repair kits contain a flexible ball-joint, a spacer and a snap ring. Due to not equal thickness of the spacer in the different kits, it is important to install all three the kit parts when replacing a flexible ball-joint. Do not mix parts of different repair kits!

Field experience has shown that this change-over has a positive impact on the lifespan of the rubber bushings. The “longer” articulation shaft may be used with the M18 as well as with the M20 fastening system (refer to figures 2 and 3).

Two different types of step nose lighting units have been installed during manufacturing.  The early units (which are limited available as spare part) are provided with a LED card for the “downward” light and an optical fiber for the “upward” light. These units have a small circuit board with a resistor to reduce the 24V power supply to an operating voltage of 3V for the optical fiber (refer also to figure 1).  The new units have an optical fiber for both the “downward” and “upward” light, and do not have a circuit board to reduce the voltage supply. These lighting units may not be connected directly to a 24V power supply but must be used together with special controllers. Failure to do will cause the immediate irreversible breakdown of the lighting unit due to overvoltage! Please also note that the “downward” light on new units is less bright. This service bulletin provides you with information on how the new step nose lighting units are connected to the vehicle wiring.

Service Information: In its production process, Bock, manufacturer of refrigerant compressors, has switched to a new type of motor protection switch for the electric motor of the refrigerant compressor. As the MP10 motor protection switch (VH11472802) is no longer made available as a spare part, as of now you will receive the new INT69G motor protection switch (VH11691810) when ordering. The MP10 and the INT69G are interchangeable, but fastening and electric connection are different.

Product Improvement: ALL VEHICLES WITH LIGHT-ALLOY WHEELS - Introduction of wheel-end monitoring system (WEM). Van Hool has released a wheel-end monitoring system (WEM) which can be installed on all vehicles equipped with light-alloy wheels. The WEM is installed at the outboard side of the wheel and monitors vibrations produced by the wheel bearing. It warns in case of bearing raceway spalling by flashing a red LED on the unit. The WEM is delivered with a magnet which is used to change from "transport" to "standstill" mode.

This phenomenon is temporarily and no indication that there is a sealing problem! The lubricant can easily be removed with ordinary cleaning product.

Field Change Program: It has been reported that the red 6 mm2 power supply wire connected at stud “MP+24V” in junction box “Vanner” is not protected by a fuse. This wire runs from stud “MP+24V” to terminal block DVB in junction box EKA, from there the wire continues to fuse holder ZB3 in junction box EKA to power fuses Z83.1 and Z86. Install an additional 30A MIDI-fuse in junction box “Vanner” to make sure that this wire is protected against overheating in case of overcurrent.

Van Hool has determined that the parcel-rack lighting circuit is not well executed due to an error in the production process. On TD925 vehicles, a connection in the parcel-rack lighting circuit is inadequate. The splicing of the electrical wires has been executed by twisting the strands together and insulating them with electrical tape instead of using a connector. Also neighbouring spare wires were mistakenly put together in the same connection. This situation can result in arching and overheating when the parcel-rack lighting circuit is energized and one of the spare wire ends is grounded. Follow the step-by-step instructions mentioned under "To modify TD925 parcel-rack lighting c ircuit". The necessary parts are listed in the table on page 2. On TDX25US vehicles, a 4-pin connector with loose wires has not been removed as it should have been. This may result in arching and overheating when the parcel-rack lighting circuit is energized and one of the loose wire ends is grounded. Follow the instructions mentioned under ?To modify TDX25 parcel-rack lighting circuit?. No parts are necessary for TDX25 vehicles.

Service Information: Bevel gear of front axle steering system Service records have shown that the grease in the bevel gear could affect performance at very low temperatures (below -20°C/-4°F). If the grease in the bevel gear becomes hard enough to affect drivability, additional manual force could be required to turn the steering wheel. This would be especially noticeable when the steering wheel is turned the first times after an initial start-up. The phenomenon could disappear later as a matter of course due to the warming up of the grease in the bevel gear. Additionally it has been determined that in some cases water has penetrated the bevel gear via the sealing thereby contaminating the grease. The penetrating water will start corrosion of the bearings. This problem shows a gradual, but continual increase of the steering forces and will not disappear at higher ambient temperatures or when the bevel gear is in use. Checking the bevel gear rotation torque will help in determining if the bevel gear needs to be replaced. If either of these conditions are observed, it is necessary to replace the bevel gear by the corresponding ZF bevel gear. Old and new bevel gears are interchangeable, but note that two different types of bevel gears are used. Also note that the new bevel gear has a mid-position which should be taken into account during the installation of the bevel gear.

Product Improvement: New Vanner 70-Series VANN-Guard Battery Equalizer Van Hool NV has been informed by Vanner Inc., manufacturer of the above-mentioned equipment, that the Vanner VANN-Guard 70-60M 60 battery equalizer # VH 10983098 has been improved. The exterior of the new unit looks identical to the former unit. The difference is internal with added electrical suppression to accommodate the greater electrical demands of newer coaches. The form-fit function is unchanged. The new unit can be used to service former units. Van Hool has discontinued the former unit. The former units will be no longer available as service replacement part. In production, the new battery equalizer will be installed as from January 2015.
