The control arms of the front and trailing axles are equipped with a flexible ball-joint at the chassis side. Van Hool has several suppliers for the repair kit of this flexible ball-joint. All of the repair kits contain a flexible ball-joint, a spacer and a snap ring. Due to not equal thickness of the spacer in the different kits, it is important to install all three the kit parts when replacing a flexible ball-joint. Do not mix parts of different repair kits!

Van Hool recently changed-over in production to a “longer” articulation shaft (VH11717611) to fasten the wheel-suspension arms to the steering knuckle carrier/hub carrier. Field experience has shown that this change-over has a positive impact on the lifespan of the rubber bushings. The “longer” articulation shaft may be used with the M18 as well as with the M20 fastening system (refer to figures 2 and 3).

Product Improvement: ALL VEHICLES WITH LIGHT-ALLOY WHEELS - Introduction of wheel-end monitoring system (WEM). Van Hool has released a wheel-end monitoring system (WEM) which can be installed on all vehicles equipped with light-alloy wheels. The WEM is installed at the outboard side of the wheel and monitors vibrations produced by the wheel bearing. It warns in case of bearing raceway spalling by flashing a red LED on the unit. The WEM is delivered with a magnet which is used to change from "transport" to "standstill" mode.

To check rating of lower-deck evaporator fans circuit-breakers for TDX25US coahes.On some of the TDX25US coaches the evaporator fans located in the lower deck climate control unit are protected by four 15 amp circuit breakers. Field reports have determined that at very hot operating conditions these circuit breakers trip too fast. To prevent this from happening, Van Hool is conducting a field change program by which first the rating of these circuit breakers has to be checked and, if necessary, the circuit breakers have to be replaced by 20 Amp circuit breakers according to the step-by-step instructions given in this service bulletin.

Improper operating coolant surge tank filler cap. We received a number of complaints regarding frequent coolant loss at the overflow line of the coolant surge tank filler cap. Tests have shown that this is due to the installation of a batch of improper operating filler caps. On these filler caps, the pressure relief valve does not close firmly on the filler neck seat, causing unnecessary coolant loss through the overflow line of the filler cap.

To change rigid seat belt buckles of aisle side passenger seats. Subject vehicles have passenger seats equipped with seat belt buckles of which the outer casing may fail. These casings are held in place by one plastic notch only. When subjected to great pressure (e.g. by standing on the buckle or tampering with the buckle), these casings may fail and consequently slide down, thereby uncovering the buckle mechanism. These buckles, as and when the covers have slid down, may give passengers the impression that the buckle mechanism is defective and as such inhibit passengers from buckling up. Van Hool has determined that the seat belt buckles at the aisle side are prone to this phenomenon due to the rigid fixation of these buckles. To address this issue, Van Hool is conducting a Safety Recall to change the rigid seat belt buckles of the aisle side passenger seats by flexible buckles.

To change fixing screws of fan-drive idler pulley bracket. Issues have been reported about broken fan-drive idler pulley bracket grade 8.8 fixing screws. Investigation has shown that the grade 8.8 fixing screws, securing the idler arm to the engine crossmember, could break under heavy operating conditions. To address this issue Van Hool is conducting a Field Change Program to change the grade 8.8 screws by grade 10.9 screws. This service bullet gives step-by-step instructions to change the fan-drive idler pulley bracket grade 8.8 fixing screws.

Introduction of new type of etnrance door emergency valve. Emergency valves are fitted near entrance doors, at the inside and outside of the vehicle. The emergency valve allows the actuating cylinder of the relevant entrance door to be depressurized, after which the entrance door can be opened.

Introduction of new transmission oil filler pipe assembly for vehicles with Cummins ISX engine and Allison WTB500® transmission. The new oil filler pipe removes possible stress on the grommet (part #11147825) that seals the oil filler pipe assembly to the transmission housing due to vibrations of the oil filler pipe assembly. The grommet prevents moisture and foreign material from entering the transmission housing and, in this way contaminating the transmission fluid. New parts are supplied as a kit. This service bulleting gives step-by-step instructions to install the improved oil filler pipe assembly.

Luggage compartment door operation during driving. Internal quality control has shown that the luggage compartment door can be operated while driving. Owners and operators of the vehicles mentioned above must load a new program into the multiplex computer module to prevent luggage compartment door operation while driving. Refer to the procedures in this Service Bulletin for instructions. The terms and conditions of the campaign have been detailed din the warranty section.

Van Hool has determined that the parcel-rack lighting circuit is not well executed due to an error in the production process. On TD925 vehicles, a connection in the parcel-rack lighting circuit is inadequate. The splicing of the electrical wires has been executed by twisting the strands together and insulating them with electrical tape instead of using a connector. Also neighbouring spare wires were mistakenly put together in the same connection. This situation can result in arching and overheating when the parcel-rack lighting circuit is energized and one of the spare wire ends is grounded. Follow the step-by-step instructions mentioned under "To modify TD925 parcel-rack lighting c ircuit". The necessary parts are listed in the table on page 2. On TDX25US vehicles, a 4-pin connector with loose wires has not been removed as it should have been. This may result in arching and overheating when the parcel-rack lighting circuit is energized and one of the loose wire ends is grounded. Follow the instructions mentioned under ?To modify TDX25 parcel-rack lighting circuit?. No parts are necessary for TDX25 vehicles.

Field Change Program: To check position of rear junction box grid There is a possibility that the grid of the rear junction box is not properly positioned with respect to the surrounding covers. The side cover can prevent the circuit breakers from tripping off in case of an overload or shorted circuit. Owners and operators should first check the position of the grid, and change if necessary.

Service Information: New coolant for vehicles with EPA2016 engine: As from the units listed with EPA2016 engine, Van Hool will factory fill the cooling and heating system with ARTECO Havoline XLC Premix 50/50 coolant for Cummins and Detroit Diesel engines. This OAT (organic acid technology) coolant is ethylene glycol based and is a nitrite, nitrate, borate, phosphate, silicate, and amine-free formulation that provides maximum protection.

Product Improvement: Introduction of new bearing for fan-drive idler pulley The cooling fan is driven from the engine crankshaft pulley by V-belts. The drive is provided with a tensioning device to make belt tension adjustment possible. As from units with EPA2016 engine onwards, Van Hool has switched to an improved bearing installation for the fan-drive idler pulley.

Service Information: Bevel gear of front axle steering system Service records have shown that the grease in the bevel gear could affect performance at very low temperatures (below -20°C/-4°F). If the grease in the bevel gear becomes hard enough to affect drivability, additional manual force could be required to turn the steering wheel. This would be especially noticeable when the steering wheel is turned the first times after an initial start-up. The phenomenon could disappear later as a matter of course due to the warming up of the grease in the bevel gear. Additionally it has been determined that in some cases water has penetrated the bevel gear via the sealing thereby contaminating the grease. The penetrating water will start corrosion of the bearings. This problem shows a gradual, but continual increase of the steering forces and will not disappear at higher ambient temperatures or when the bevel gear is in use. Checking the bevel gear rotation torque will help in determining if the bevel gear needs to be replaced. If either of these conditions are observed, it is necessary to replace the bevel gear by the corresponding ZF bevel gear. Old and new bevel gears are interchangeable, but note that two different types of bevel gears are used. Also note that the new bevel gear has a mid-position which should be taken into account during the installation of the bevel gear.
