Technical service bulletins are instructions a manufacturer sent its dealers about a known fault. They are not recalls and the work is usually not free, but they are the clearest signal of a problem the manufacturer already knows about.

The control arms of the front and trailing axles are equipped with a flexible ball-joint at the chassis side. Van Hool has several suppliers for the repair kit of this flexible ball-joint. All of the repair kits contain a flexible ball-joint, a spacer and a snap ring. Due to not equal thickness of the spacer in the different kits, it is important to install all three the kit parts when replacing a flexible ball-joint. Do not mix parts of different repair kits!

Van Hool recently changed-over in production to a “longer” articulation shaft (VH11717611) to fasten the wheel-suspension arms to the steering knuckle carrier/hub carrier. Field experience has shown that this change-over has a positive impact on the lifespan of the rubber bushings. The “longer” articulation shaft may be used with the M18 as well as with the M20 fastening system (refer to figures 2 and 3).

Service Information: In its production process, Bock, manufacturer of refrigerant compressors, has switched to a new type of motor protection switch for the electric motor of the refrigerant compressor. The MP10 and the INT69G are interchangeable, but fastening and electric connection are different.

Product Improvement: ALL VEHICLES WITH LIGHT-ALLOY WHEELS - Introduction of wheel-end monitoring system (WEM). Van Hool has released a wheel-end monitoring system (WEM) which can be installed on all vehicles equipped with light-alloy wheels. The WEM is installed at the outboard side of the wheel and monitors vibrations produced by the wheel bearing. It warns in case of bearing raceway spalling by flashing a red LED on the unit. The WEM is delivered with a magnet which is used to change from "transport" to "standstill" mode.

They are caused by the protective anti-corrosion coating at the inside of the bell housing which becomes liquid at transmission operating temperature. This phenomenon is temporarily and no indication that there is a sealing problem! The lubricant can easily be removed with ordinary cleaning product.

Transmission refuses to shift into gear after a low air pressure. The Field Change program, subject of this bulletin, applies to vehicles equipped with a Detroit Diesel DD13 EPA 16 engine in combination with an Allison WTB500 FuelSense 2-transmission. It has come to the attention of Van Hool that on some of the above mentioned vehicles the transmission sometimes refuses to shift into gear after a low air pressure condition. Field Change Program: It has come to the attention of Van Hool that the fire suppression system, when activated while driving, shuts down the engine after 15 seconds. As a result of this, the door brake is automatically applied. To prevent this from happening while driving, it is necessary to load the newest version of the multiplex program. The newest version of multiplex program 11468111 is available through the Van Hool customer portal under the "Software" section.

To change and reroute alternator ground cables. It has been reported that ground cables of both AC172 alternators are too close to the exhaust pipe and turbocharger. The ground cables insulation might suffer damage due to excessive heat.

Improper operating coolant surge tank filler cap. We received a number of complaints regarding frequent coolant loss at the overflow line of the coolant surge tank filler cap. Tests have shown that this is due to the installation of a batch of improper operating filler caps. On these filler caps, the pressure relief valve does not close firmly on the filler neck seat, causing unnecessary coolant loss through the overflow line of the filler cap.

Introduction of new generation DANA G171 Drive Axles. Dana Corporation have changed the wheel end bearing of the G171 drive axle from "unitized" to "compact" bearings. In line with this change associated components such as spindle, hub, hub nut and washer locking system and axle half shafts are also changed. The track of the new drive axle has maintained but the overall length is increased with 0.5 inch.
