Service Bulletin/Repair Instructions

Technical Bulletin (Oil Consumption Measurement): Customer states oil consumption is higher than the Volkswagen oil consumption standard of up to 0.5 quarts per 600 miles, or 0.5 liters per 1000 km. In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific break-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road conditions. Further factors include the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil. This document discusses the "Fault Codes" necessary to diagnosis, and potential remedy of the issue. The fault codes for checking warranty coverage for servicing the vehicle are also available.

VOLKSWAGEN: HEADLIGHTS MAY INTERMITTENTLY DIM SLIGHTLY AT IDLE. AT IDLE SPEED THE ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE CAN FLUCTUATE, AS THE ALTERNATOR CANNOT FULLY COMPENSATE THE FLUCTUATIONS. SOME ELECTRIC CONSUMERS COME ON IN CYCLES OR HAVE NO CONSTANT CURRENT CONSUMPTION, WHICH AMPLIFIES THIS EFFECT. THE LOAD CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE BATTERY CAN ALSO INFLUENCE THIS EFFECT. MODELS GOLF, GTI, NEW BEETLE & CONVERTIBLE, EOS, JETTA, WAGON, SPORTWAGEN, RABBIT, R32, GOLF WAGON, TIGUAN. *PE

VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE CAMPAIGN: SEE DOCUMENT SEARCH BUTTON FOR OWNER LETTER. IN SOME VEHICLES IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A BUSHING INSIDE THE MECHATRONIC UNIT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO WEAR OUT PREMATURELY, CAUSING THE CLUTCHES INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION TO OPERATE LESS SMOOTHLY THAN BEFORE. THE DRIVER WILL BEGIN TO NOTICE CHANGES IN THE WAY THE VEHICLE FEELS AS THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS (JERKING). THIS CHANGE CAN BECOME VERY PRONOUNCED, THE VEHICLE REMAINS SAFE TO DRIVE. *PE

Tech Tips (with 1K0 Part Number J500 ? Replacement Steering Harness): If the steering rack is replaced on the above models for any reason, it is necessary to replace the steering harness as well. The new harness may be equipped with an extra connector. If all connections are made correctly, then it is necessary to remove that connector and tape the exposed wires back into the harness. Be sure to tape tightly in order to provide a water-tight repair.
