This applies to all standard automatic and DSG transmissions. Due to the functional and design variations in each automatic transmission, the transmission fluid is developed and used by Volkswagen for specific purpose within each application. Under no circumstances are these fluids to be used outside their designated transmission and replacing any of the Volkswagen approved automatic transmission fluids with a universal ?one fluid fits all? approach is not accepted.

Incorrect torque converter or flywheel/flexplate installation can result in transmission damage. When installing an engine, flywheel or transmission, please follow the installation procedures outlined in ELSA. For the flywheel/flexplate, please be certain the correct shim is installed between it and the crankshaft (reference VWIQ120). When installing a torque converter, press the torque converter hub through the seal as far as the first stop. Turn the torque converter while pushing toward the transmission using light force, until the cut outs in the torque converter hub lock into the pump wheel plate. The torque converter slides in. The torque converter is installed correctly if it is easy to turn by hand and if it fits evenly in the transmission bell housing. Additionally, it should spin freely when the transmission bell housing bolts are torqued to the engine block, prior to installation of the flywheel to converter bolts (reference VWIQ121).

To identify a misfiring cylinder when a random fault is set (P0300), utilize the following; Select PCM (ECM) from the module menu (figure 1). At the top of the screen, mouse over ?Monitors? to open the drop down list. Select OBD II monitors. From the OBD II monitor list (figure 2), scroll down and select ?Which cylinder is misfiring?(figure 3). A value block displaying all cylinder misfire counts can be viewed and also monitored while running to isolate the causal cylinder. Once the specific cylinder(s) have been isolated, proceed with misfire diagnosis to determine root cause and repair as necessary.

To detect which line(s) is inoperative, utilize a volt meter to check for 0 V, which will be present after the open in the grid line. The check must be performed with the engine running and heated rear window switched on. Switch OFF the ignition and visually locate the damage. Proceed with checking any other lines as necessary. Once the damaged line is identified, repair utilizing the Repair kit by Permatex® ITEM 09117.

If the engine does not crank but a clicking noise can be heard from the starter, install a jumper cable from the battery negative cable to the engine block and attempt to start the engine again. When servicing the timing chain sprocket or removing the vibration damper, be aware that one bolt holds both the vibration damper (harmonic balancer) and the crankshaft timing chain sprocket to the crankshaft. Once the damper is removed, the crankshaft should not be rotated unless special tool spacer T10368 has been installed. The crankshaft timing chain sprocket and spur gear drive on the crankshaft have a coupling that must be seated correctly during assembly. Failure to install special tool spacer T10368 before rotating engine will cause the engine to skip time and bend valves.
