This Service Information bulletin announces a design change to the clutch release bearing used on the models as listed above. During assembly of the bearing, a different type of grease is used which has a higher resistance to heat. In cases where the operator keeps a foot on the clutch pedal for extended periods, an increased amount of heat is generated which can cause the grease inside the bearing to deteriorate. In a case of prolonged clutch pedal application, seizure of the bearing can occur with potential damage to other related components.

REVISED. CA PZEV SPEC MODELS ONLY. Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) has determined that vehicles affected by this Service Program require ECM reprogramming. Under certain severe driving patterns, such as high speed highway/uphill driving and/or accelerating with high engine revolutions, the efficiency of an affected vehicle?s catalytic converter may begin to degrade beyond design parameters. (The ?Check Engine? light will illuminate to alert the driver if the catalytic converter efficiency has degraded beyond an acceptable level and if the vehicle may be releasing air pollutants that exceed Federal or California emission standards.) To prevent this condition, a modification to the Engine Control Module software logic has been developed that will improve management of the catalytic converter. This condition is a software issue and has no impact on vehicle drivability.

2.5 Liter N/A engine only. REVISED. Subaru of America, Inc. has determined that vehicles affected by this Service Program require ECM reprogramming. A modification to the Engine Control Module software logic has been developed to improve the performance of the emission control system. This software change will not adversely affect fuel economy or performance. This software update is intended to improve vehicle emissions when the vehicle is operated in cold weather and the engine is turned off and restarted within short periods of time such as in several minute intervals. The A/F sensor contains a heating element, which is controlled by the ECM, and which assists the sensor in reaching an optimum temperature, resulting in better accuracy. When the vehicle is operated under the conditions described above, there could be a longer than desired delay in the ECM?s turning on the A/F sensor heating element, resulting in higher than desired emissions. This software enhancement will correct that condition.

THE ACTUAL RECALL FOR THE PUDDLE LIGHTS (WQE41) REMAINS UNCHANGED. TO REPLACE THE WQE99 NOTIFICATION, COMMENTS WILL BE ADDED TO THE VEHICLE COVERAGE INQUIRY TO IDENTIFY THESE VEHICLES. WHEN LOOKING FOR OPEN RECALLS IN THE VEHICLE COVERAGE INQUIRY, PLEASE CHECK THE COMMENTS TO IDENTIFY VINS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE THE OPTIONAL PUDDLE LIGHTS. A SHORT CIRCUIT CAN DEVELOP WHEN EITHER THE PUDDLE LIGHTS OR CONNECTORS ARE EXPOSED TO AN ELECTROLYTIC MOISTURE SOURCE (I.E.- SALT WATER) AND IT PENETRATES THE CIRCUIT BOARD OF THE PUDDLE LIGHT OR THE PINS OF THE PUDDLE LIGHT CONNECTOR(S). THIS BULLETIN PROVIDES AN INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE TO ADDRESS A MISALIGNMENT OF THE REAR UPPER AND LOWER WINDOW SASH WHICH MAY CAUSE THE FRONT DOOR GLASS TO BIND OR MOVE SLOWLY WHEN OPENING OR CLOSING. THIS CONDITION MAY ALSO CAUSE ERRATIC OPERATION OF THE POWER WINDOW AUTO-UP FEATURE (IF EQUIPPED).
